The Blu-ray disc has a higher storage capacity which is enabled by a blue laser with a shorter wavelength than the standard red laser used in CD and DVD technology. CD and DVD both use an infrared laser with wavelengths of only 780nm (CD) and 650nm (DVD), whilst the blu-ray disc utilises a blue laser with a wavelength of only 405nm. The benefit of having a blue laser with a shorter wavelength means it is possible to write smaller data pits and therefore vastly increases the amount of data on the disc.
